Digital X-rays Overview
Digital x-rays, also known as digital radiographs, are done with an annual dental examination to allow a better view of your oral health. Using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) technology, our scanning device will rotate around your head to create hundreds of images that are then transmitted to our computer system for the development of a highly detailed model. Led by Dr. Brett Cotham, these x-rays allow one of our expert dentists to diagnose concerns that are not visible by the naked eye, and to learn about the health of the inside of your mouth, including the teeth, gums, and jaw. There are several oral health conditions that can be seen on digital images, such as decay, cavities, cysts, abscesses, bone atrophy, and impactions. When these conditions are discovered early, they may have more effective and less invasive treatment options. During your annual exam at 32nd Street Dental in Joplin, MO, x-rays will help our team accurately diagnose and treat oral health conditions.

Best Candidates for Digital X-rays
In most cases, x-rays are a part of your dental exam. They can be administered as part of a preventive dental treatment plan or if you are experiencing pain in your mouth. Though digital x-rays use less radiation than film x-rays, 32nd Street Dental likes to minimize patient exposure. While they are usually safe for any patient, women who are breastfeeding or may be pregnant should talk to one of our team members at the beginning of the appointment so extra precautions can be taken.
What to Expect from Digital X-rays
Often done at the beginning of your dental exam, digital x-rays take about 5 – 10 minutes to complete. Most patients will have a series of x-rays taken to include all areas. After they are complete, they are uploaded and can be viewed by you and our experienced team during your examination. You will be informed if there are any areas of concern and go over treatment options.
Digital X-rays Follow-Up
A series of digital images will generally be performed once a year at your dental exam. For some visits, a whole mouth series may be performed to get a more comprehensive view of the teeth, gums, and jaw. Your digital images will be stored with your oral health file at 32nd Street Dental so our team can view changes over time and chart any developing problems.
Insurance Coverage for Digital X-rays
Usually, dental insurance will include and cover digital imaging costs as part of a dental exam. Our office will contact your insurance company to estimate any balances. For any out-of-pocket expenses or if you don't have dental insurance, 32nd Street Dental accepts many payment methods and we can give you information on medical financing.
Plan Your Procedure
X-rays are an advanced technology that can help diagnose and treat oral issues. As part of a regular dental exam, they are able to give our team a unique view.
