Overview of Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride's importance to improving dental enamel has been proved by the American Dental Association (ADA), the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Medical Association (AMA), and other professional organizations. Communities that add fluoride to their water supply have fewer problems with tooth decay and cavities. A natural mineral found in some food and the earth's crust, fluoride builds up teeth and bones. Professional fluoride treatments at 32nd Street Dental in Joplin, MO can help children with developing teeth and adults with decaying enamels to restore their oral health. Best Candidates for Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatments can be given to patients of all ages, though it is usually given to younger patients who still have growing teeth or who have not developed a proper home oral care routine. Our experienced dentists, led by Dr. Cotham, also recommend fluoride treatments for adult patients who don't have fluoride in their drinking water or who are prone to cavities. 32nd Street Dental uses different fluoride formulas if you have specific needs, like neutral sodium fluoride if you have dry mouth and acidulated phosphate fluoride if you have dental restorations (bridges, crowns, and dentures). There are also different flavors to make these treatments easier for all patients.

What to Expect from Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatments are usually performed every six months after your cleaning. As soon as you select your flavor, the hygienist will prepare the treatment as either a gel, foam, or varnish. It will be left on for up to five minutes to allow the fluoride time to penetrate the enamel before it can be spit out. The hygienist will use suction to help clear your mouth after the treatment, but you may not rinse your mouth, eat, or drink for at least 30 minutes after.

Follow-Up on Fluoride Treatment

Nausea and vomiting can occur if you consume any fluoride, but this should diminish about a day following treatment. In some cases, one of our dentists may give you fluoride supplements for you or your child to take at home. Since fluoride can be toxic in high amounts, adults should be careful and keep supplements out of reach of children. While these treatments help to strengthen the enamel, you should continue or establish a good home oral care routine, including brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste and flossing. You should also attend your scheduled exams and cleanings at 32nd Street Dental so our team can reassess your need for fluoride treatments.

Fluoride Treatment Insurance Coverage

Most dental insurance companies cover fluoride treatments for children while adults may not be covered. Our team works to find your exact coverage from your insurance company before determining your out-of-pocket costs. For patients without insurance, 32nd Street Dental accepts many payment methods and can help you find medical financing if needed.
